Roofer Insurance Claim Red Flags: Why They Ask and What a Fair Price Looks Like
Asking about insurance is normal: it tells a roofer what an adjuster may have already seen. The price should not move, because it comes from the roof, not the claim. Florida’s roofer insurance claim rules bar some offers outright; the checker shows which.

Roofer insurance claim rules in Florida: what the law bars
Section 489.147 of the Florida Statutes sets what a roofer, or anyone paid to knock doors for one, may not do on a roof claim.
Tap what a roofer said or did. Orange means Florida law bars it; gray means slow down.
Nothing tapped yet.
Why a roofer asks if insurance is involved
It tells the roofer what has already happened to your roof. Tap a clipboard to see what each reason means for you.
Fair reasons. It turns into a warning sign when it comes before anyone looks at your roof, or the next question is what your policy pays.
Your price should not change because insurance is paying
A roof costs what the work costs. Who writes the check does not change the roof.
Your insurer writes its own estimate. It may land higher or lower than the roofer’s and can change as hidden damage turns up. A gap is a question for your insurer. A roofer should never raise the price to match the claim.

What an honest roof estimate shows
It shows what you pay for without you having to ask.
To compare two, line them up item by item. A lower number that leaves out the permit or the decking is incomplete, not cheaper. See how we write ours on our free roof estimates page.
Look for these five lines
- The exact work, repair or replacement, and which parts of the roof
- The materials, named by type
- Tear-off of the old roof, disposal and cleanup
- The permit, and who pulls it
- What happens if the decking (the wood under the roof covering) is rotted

Questions homeowners ask about roofers and claims
Can a roofer be there when the adjuster inspects my roof?
Florida law does not stop a roofer from being there to show the adjuster the damage they found. Ask your insurer for the date and tell the roofer.
Can I cancel a roofing contract I signed after a hurricane?
Often, yes. If you signed within 180 days of a storm the Governor declared a state of emergency for, and your home is in that area, you can cancel within 10 days or by the official start date, whichever comes first. Send the notice by certified mail.
Should I call my insurance company before I sign a roofing contract?
Yes, when the work ties to a claim. Florida roofing contracts must carry a notice telling you to check coverage, deductibles and policy terms with your insurer first. Signing confirms you were told.
How do I check a roofer’s Florida license?
Search the name or license number at myfloridalicense.com and confirm it is active. Ours is CCC1332678, Florida certified roofing contractor.
